What is your offering?

How easy it is to come to the Celebration of the Eucharist without thinking much about what we are bringing with us. We often think tht we are coming to be fed. While an element of that is true, our first priority is to offer and worship. We are a "priestly people," which means that we offer our sacrifice. But we have to have the tools with which to worship. We are fed every day through what God has provided. This is our chance to give back. And, when we give back in  a state of grace, our imperfect sacrifice becomes perfected in Christ and presented to the Father. And so, I wrote this prayer as a preparation for Mass.

At our daily Mass, the members of the assembly place a piece of bread into the ciborium to be presented at the approprtiate time. We will soon be praying this prayer just prior to the Gathering Song. I hope that you will find it useful.

Father in Heaven,

I have come to offer you what I have very specifically done in the name of Jesus as directed by your Holy Spirit. I proclaim it as worthy of you. This bread and wine is the work of my hands, what my hands have made out of what you have provided for me. Others have and will offer too and I do it in communion with them. We offer it for ourselves and those who lack the state of grace at this time in their journey. May our participation with what you have provided be worthy to be consecrated into the Body and Blood of your Son that we may find nourishment to serve you as even stronger disciples.

Amen
